Frequently asked questions

What is parental leave supplement?

Parental leave supplement is a collectively agreed parental insurance that can provide additional compensation when you are on parental leave from your job and receive parental allowance from the Social Insurance Agency. The compensation is paid out until the child turns 18 months old or up to 18 months after the adoption date.

Does the insurance cover the 10 days of leave when a child is born?

No, the insurance does not cover the 10 days of leave (temporary parental benefit) in connection with the birth of a child. The 10 days were previously referred to as “paternity days.”

Does the insurance apply when caring for a sick child (VAB)?

No, the insurance does not cover temporary parental benefit for the care of a sick child.

What is the difference between parental benefit and the parental benefit supplement?

Parental benefit

The Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) pays parental benefit when you are on parental leave. It is part of Sweden’s social insurance system.

Parental benefit supplement

The parental benefit supplement (FPT) is an insurance benefit provided through the collective agreement at your workplace. It is a supplement to the parental benefit you receive from Försäkringskassan.

This means that you receive additional payments for some of the days when you receive parental benefit from Försäkringskassan. The parental benefit supplement is paid by Afa Försäkring. You must apply for it yourself to receive compensation.

Not all employers have a collective agreement that includes the parental benefit supplement. However, they may offer other arrangements that provide additional compensation on top of the parental benefit from Försäkringskassan. Some employers refer to this as parental pay.

Which period of parental leave should I report?

You should report the longest period of parental leave that you and your employer have agreed upon.

If you are taking a shorter period of parental leave now and expect to take a longer period later, with more days of parental benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), you should wait and apply to us for the parental benefit supplement (FPT) for that longer period instead.

What happens if my employment ends?

This insurance does not include any extended coverage. This means that you cannot receive compensation for a period of parental leave that takes place after your employment has ended.

If your employment ends during an ongoing period of parental leave, you may still be entitled to a parental benefit supplement for the remaining days for which you receive parental benefit at the sickness benefit level. The period of parental leave must have been approved by your employer before your employment ended.

If you are temporarily laid off, your employment has not ended, and the parental benefit supplement continues to apply as usual.

When should I submit my application?

Once you have received parental benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), you can submit an application to us.

You can also apply retrospectively for periods during which you received parental benefit in the past.

Do I need to have worked for a certain period before taking parental leave?

Yes. Before the birth or adoption of the child, you must have been employed for at least 12 months during the previous four years by one or more employers that provide the parental benefit supplement (FPT).

Do I have to pay tax on the compensation I receive?

Yes. We deduct 30 percent tax from the parental benefit supplement (FPT) and report the compensation to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) every month.

How many days of parental benefit supplement can I receive?

• Employed for 12 months before the birth or adoption of the child: you are entitled to a maximum of 60 days of compensation.

• Employed for 24 months before the birth or adoption of the child: you are entitled to a maximum of 180 days of compensation.

If you have had several employments with different employers that provide this insurance, you can add together your periods of employment from the last four years.
