If you fall ill
Health insurance (AGS, AGS-KL) will apply if you fall ill. This compensation is a supplement to the compensation you receive from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency.
How do I know whether I have insurance?
As a wage-earner, you have health insurance if you work for a private or cooperative undertaking, or are employed by a municipality or region.
When are you eligible for insurance compensation?
You can apply for compensation when you
have been employed for at least 90 days
have an income entitling you to sickness benefit (SGI) from the Social Insurance Agency
receive compensation from the Social Insurance Agency.
Examples of compensation from the Social Insurance Agency:
Sickness benefit
Rehabilitation compensation
Disease carrier's allowance
Sickness allowance
Activity allowance
Do you work for a private company?
If you are on sick leave for longer than 14 days, you must submit a claim to Afa Försäkring.
Do you work for a municipality or region?
If you are on sick leave for longer than 90 days, you must submit a claim to Afa Försäkring.
How to submit a claim
Log in and submit a claim via My Pages at Afa Försäkring using your BankID.
If you do not have a BankID, you can fill in a form and send it to Afa Försäkring, 106 27 Stockholm. The claim forms are in Swedish. Get claim forms.
To submit a claim, you need:
your own BankID
your employer's details: company name or registration number, and telephone number
your income entitling you to sickness benefit (SGI) or annual income
the date that you reported your illness to your employer
a medical certificate stating your diagnosis, i.e. the reason for your sick leave.
What happens once you have submitted a claim?
When we receive your claim, we start by:
asking your employer to confirm your employment
asking the Social Insurance Agency to confirm that they are paying you sickness benefit.
Once your employer and the Social Insurance Agency have replied, we will start to handle your case. If we require more information, we will get in touch with you.
When we are ready, we will notify you of whether you are eligible for compensation, and how much. You will be notified of the decision on My Pages and in a letter sent to you.

Frequently asked questions
How long can one receive compensation?
The number of days you can receive compensation from the Collective Agreement Group Insurance is determined by your collective agreement.
If you are a privately or cooperatively employed worker: compensation is paid from day 15 of the sickness period, and at most until day 360.
If you are employed within the municipality, region, the Church of Sweden, and certain municipal companies: compensation is paid from day 91 of the sickness period, and at most until day 360. For the first 90 days, most people receive sick pay from their employer. If you receive sick pay for a shorter period, you can receive compensation when you no longer receive sick pay, but at the earliest when you have been on sick leave for 15 days.
Why have I been rejected?
A common reason for rejection is that we and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) have different processing times. It takes about 30 days before Försäkringskassan pays out compensation.
To be able to receive compensation from us, you must have received sickness benefit from Försäkringskassan. We cannot pay anything to you before you have received sickness benefit from Försäkringskassan. You will then receive a rejection decision from us. To avoid being rejected, you can wait to notify us until you have received sickness benefit from Försäkringskassan.
Do I need to report that I am well again?
When you are no longer on sick leave at all, you must report this to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). Our compensation and payments are based on the information we receive from Försäkringskassan, so when you report that you are well to them, you are also considered well with us. Reporting that you are well means that you have fully returned to work; if you are on partial sick leave, you should not report that you are well.
Can I report to the sickness insurance retroactively?
Yes, you can. You do not need to report to the sickness insurance at the same time as you make your report to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). It is perfectly fine to do it later. You can also report older and already completed periods of sick leave.
Do I have to pay tax on my compensation?
Yes, we normally deduct 30 percent tax and report the compensation to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) every month.
What is sickness benefit qualifying income (SGI)?
The sickness benefit qualifying income (SGI) is an amount calculated by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) based on your annual income.
Your SGI determines how much sickness benefit (sjukpenning) or parental benefit (föräldrapenning) you may receive.
What is extended coverage?
Extended coverage means that the insurance may continue to apply for up to 720 calendar days after your employment has ended or during a longer period of absence from work, such as a leave of absence.
When is the compensation paid?
If you receive daily compensation
Once we receive information that you have been granted sickness benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), we can pay your daily compensation. We receive information directly from Försäkringskassan about when sickness benefit has been paid.
If you receive monthly compensation
If you receive sickness compensation or activity compensation from Försäkringskassan, we pay your monthly compensation on the 25th of each month.
Can I receive compensation for my diagnosis?
No. The Collective Agreement Sickness Insurance (AGS) is not a diagnosis insurance policy. Instead, it supplements the compensation you receive from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) when you are ill.
You receive compensation from the Collective Agreement Sickness Insurance because you are unable to work due to illness, not because of the specific diagnosis you have.
Can I receive compensation if I am on partial sick leave?
Yes, you can receive compensation if you are on partial sick leave and receive sickness benefit from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).
You do not need to notify us if Försäkringskassan starts paying partial sicknessbenefit instead of full sickness benefit. We receive that information automatically.
